The Best Sourdough in the Seattle area

The Best Sourdough in the Seattle area

Alright friends, let’s talk about sourdough bread. The best places to buy it, how satisfying the crackle is when you cut into it, and where you can learn how to make it in the Seattle area.

I first started getting curious about bread quality after returning from a trip to Paris with my cousin. We ate sooo much bread (and cheese) while we were there, and didn’t feel as terrible as we normally did eating it in the states. Upon returning home, I began to research why this is and began a quest to find bread in Seattle that not only tasted good but was made with integrity and high quality, local ingredients. Stage right: sourdough bread.

After a lot of delightful taste testings, here are my favorite spots to grab a loaf for the week with my personal favorite marked with a 🤎. All five of these locations have placed a strong emphasis on craft, local ingredients, and community. Give em a try!

  • Ben’s Bread Co - bakery nestled in Greenwood with a key focus on using the highest quality (and wherever possible, local) ingredients.
  • Cottage Bakery - cozy nook up in Edmonds that offers a fun variety of sourdough breads including a toasted walnut sourdough that is so so good. Well worth the drive up north!
  • Macrina Bakery - a familiar and well established name amongst locals, Macrina has been around since the early 2000s, and the quality of their bread speaks for itself.
  • Salmonberry Goods - a well loved farmers market destination for fresh bread and baked goods. They also hosting bagel toastie popups on Saturdays - keep an eye on their Instagram for details!
  • 🤎 Sea Wolf - There’s just something special about Seawolf’s sourdough bread. Of all the places I tried, it was the tangy taste of their bread I enjoyed the most. Make sure to check out their sister bakery Oxbow too!

Many of these locations also offer sourdough classes. I took the “White Sourdough Class” at Sea Wolf (at the Oxbow location), and was really impressed with the value of the class. In addition to being taught by one of the owners, we all left with a tea towel, bread basket, white sourdough recipe, and dough from all of its various stages (levain (aka starter), freshly baked, proofed, etc.). Highly recommend signing up for one of their classes if you’re interested in learning how to make sourdough bread at home.

Any bakeries missing from the list that you think I should try? Send me a message on Instagram! I’d love to check them out.
